Obama Senate allies to push government health plan

WASHINGTON (AFP) President Barack Obama’s top Senate ally on Monday said sweeping legislation to remake US health care will include a government-backed insurance plan that lets states opt out if they wish.
In a move swiftly welcomed by the White House, Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid said a so-called “public option” was “not a silver bullet” but that he believed it was the best way to tame runaway US health care costs.
“I believe that a public option can achieve the goal of bringing meaningful reform to our broken system,” said the senator, who pointed to polls showing robust public support for giving the US government a wider health care role.
